Basic Beekeeping Manual 1

A great resource for individuals, trainers, or organisations who need a written introduction to setting up a beekeeping business is available from Gay Marris, Science Coordinator, National Bee Unit, The Food and Environment Research Agency, Sand Hutton Yorkshire, YO41 1LZ, UK.

The Manual is written by Pam Gregory who has spent 12 years working with beekeepers in sub Saharan Africa.  It is aimed primarily for African countries and is available in English, French, Swahilli and Chichewa.  It is a pictorial guide to beekeeping and is divided into nine short sections.  Sections include information about: The life of a bee, how to keep safe when beekeeping, how to make a simple bee veil, how to make a moveable comb top bar beehive, how to set up a good apiary, clearing an apiary site, how to manage bees, how to harvest quality honey and beeswax.

The Basic Beekeeping Manual has been distributed to initiatives in 25 developing countries, including 14 African nations. If you would like to receive a copy, please send your name and address by email to: g.marris@csl.gov.uk. Gay will be pleased to mail you a hardcopy.  We would like to thank the Waterloo Foundation for their continued support that has enabled us to produce the Manual.
