View Full Version : Visiting Honey Bees?

Hello,

I have another honey bee question regarding bees in the home but have not found any information relating to my situation. Was wondering if someone could answer this.

Last week on Wednesday I noticed 3 of what I thought were wasps in the bathroom. A little strange but I just assumed there was a nest nearby. Then on Thursday evening when I got home there were well over 100 in there - mostly dead or dying. We got the council pest controller out and he said they were honey bees. Since then we have had a few bees in the bathroom over the course of the day, but they all die. The last 2 days there have been none. I noticed for the first few days a hole in the wall by the toilet pipe and actually saw them going in here - which would lead to the bathroom. Again we haven't seen any for a couple of days.

My question is was this just a swarm that took up residence for a couple of days or will the bees have hatched here? Obviously if they have gone it will be hard to locate any nest etc so what is the next option for me? To block up the hole? Are they likely to return in a second wave or are more likely to hatch? We spoke to a beekeeper but as they are dying had little joy so I am not really sure what to do but with a 7 week old baby in the house I really would like to avoid this happening again.

Cheers.

You need to block up any holes in the bathroom to stop them entering. You could leave the window open just enough to let them out. They are probably dying as they cant get food or water. If they are not causing you any problems out side you could leave them to it.

In addition to blocking up the hole in the bathroom I would watch the hole outside on a warm sunny day and see if bees are still flying in and out. If they are and they are not getting into the bathroom you may have a nest in the cavity wall or in the attic. In either case I fear it is a job for pest control. It is possible to remove a bees' nest from an attic but it will be messy and there will potentially be bees everywhere.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I have just returned from a long weekend away and there are still no bees in the bathroom (I have not yet blocked up the hole inside). The hole outside leads into the casing where the toilet is housed so I cannot see how it comes in. There have been no bees sighted outside either since last Wednesday. Is it possible they have left? It seems so strange for them to just vanish. We already had the council pest controller out who refused to do anything. If I leave it some time longer and there are still no sightings can I fill in the external hole?
