Beekeeping......oh my........what have I done?

I am 30 years old, I have been married for 3 years and am a new father to a fantastic little boy. Surely there things that I should be doing at this age which don’t involve little yellow and black insects that can hurt you if you get too close to them or are remotely clumsy (which at 6ft 5 I have an amazing ability to be). My wife things I am loosing my mind, my little boy looks at me rather strangely when I say I won’t be able to do bathtime this evening as I have my evening class on beekeeping. My mother blames my father for these sorts of ideas (he is after all a Morris Dancer) and my colleagues think I have just simply lost the plot.

It is therefore surely not a surprise to you all that I often reflect on precisely what it is that I am doing! If I am honest I cannot really remember what it was that sparked my interest in bees this year. I could focus primarily on the plight of the honey bee so often quoted this year in the press and last. Sadly the honey bee is in trouble and is dying out in increasing numbers all over the world (with the exception of Australia surprisingly) to mystery illnesses. I could also focus on the fact that I am increasingly becoming fascinated in elements of the self sufficient lifestyle and therefore love gardening and growing vegetables on the allotment (I know, I know, I am only 30 years old!). The old romantic in my however has idealistic notions of taking my little boy up to the allotment and each Saturday going to check the bees with him just to teach him about the world and where everything that ends up on his plate comes from. I really hope this day comes though and my idealistic thoughts turn into reality.

The day my bees arrived.....

Posted 31-05-2010 at 10:53 PM by jamesdearsley (The Musings of a Surrey Beekeeper)

Well today has been an interesting day.......

I had a lovely day with the family today with Sebastian meeting up with all his mates and having a whale of a time just larking about. Amazing the transition in just 20 months and now seeing the little characters coming out and long term friendships settling in. Even more amazing was the moment that Sebastian walked up to Jo, bottom lip out and quivering. “Bee” was the word being uttered as his little eyes started to well up a little....

Picking up bees....you must be mad!

Posted 26-05-2010 at 09:37 PM by jamesdearsley (The Musings of a Surrey Beekeeper)

I have just finished the practical session today with my local association and I have to say it was the best session yet. We discovered our new queen which was great to see. It was good to see one quite clearly different to the rest of the bees with her pointed abdomen. It has given me the confidence that I should also be able to spot one relatively easily (I say that now but just wait till I get my own bees!)

There were also several other points of note this week; almost everyone...

The Polish, their moustaches and their bees....

Posted 16-05-2010 at 07:54 PM by jamesdearsley (The Musings of a Surrey Beekeeper)

So here I am stuck in another hotel room with the corporate world cruelly taking me away from the family and the prospect of bees for another Saturday. I was looking forward to sorting out my final hive position today and preparing my area for the Beehaus beehive. Such fun thinking what could be happening very soon – surely it can only be days away now (but still no sign of the bees, concern is growing by the hour)

However, all is not lost I have to say. I am here in Poland and because...

War stories during an apiary session

Posted 28-04-2010 at 10:29 PM by jamesdearsley (The Musings of a Surrey Beekeeper)

It is late and I still have the slight smell of smoke around me from my latest trip in the apiary (that smell has already become synonymous to my weekly trips to the apiary, quite a distinctive and not at all unpleasent smoky smell). Quite an exciting day today as I got the chance to actually lift out a frame from a hive and have a real look around. Quite amazing really as I am sure in a few weeks time, once I have my own bees, this will be second nature. For the time being however I still get...

I have now found out that button fly jeans are not brilliant for beekeeping.....

Posted 09-04-2010 at 07:55 PM by jamesdearsley (The Musings of a Surrey Beekeeper)

I felt that I needed to sit down and reflect on last nights activities while my memory was still intact. It turns out that if you are a member of an association of beekeepers they will also mentor you through your lifetime on the practical elements of the role. At our local association it is all included in your annual membership, I think I paid £45 for the year (which also includes insurance)

I think this is fabulous and a great way to a/ meet other beekeepers in a similar situation...
