Huddersfield and District Bee Keeping Association

Honley Show

During the past two years H.D.B.K.A. has had a stall in the Countryside Marquee at Honley Show. These stalls have proved very popular and attracted a lot of interest as well as swelling our membership. The object of the exercise was to demonstrate our enthusiasm for bees, say what fascinating insects they are and discuss with the public how we manage them. The main attraction was the observation hive. The first year we must have had a shy queen as she spent much of her time hiding round the back. In 2008 and 2009, however, the queen behaved herself and showed off to all the inquisitive viewers. On the stall we also displayed large, illustrated posters of bee activity, hive parts and equipment. We also had several different types of honey for comparative tasting which many children particularly enjoyed. Lots of visitors signed our petition which highlighted our objections to the government's cuts and lack of spending on bee disease research particularly at a time of such great national and international colony losses and its consequences for agriculture.

Thanks to all our members who made the stall such a success.
