Membership Application

The majority of members of the BBKA (who are usually beekeepers) obtain their membership through a local beekeeping association that is an established member of the BBKA. Your Local Association secretary can give you more information and the subscription that is payable. This is usually between £20 to £30 per annum. The various classes of membership of the BBKA are set out in Clause 7 of the BBKA Constitution. These arrangements also include Partner membership and Country membership.

Membership as a direct or Individual Member of BBKA is an annual subscription of (Overseas £18.00) payable directly to the BBKA (UK and NI Individual membership is £33.00 per annum). Individual Members (England and Wales) can take out Bee Diseases Insurance (BDI) for a premium depending on the number of hives (see Insurance Cover).

The individual membership year runs 1st October to 30th September and no pro rata discounts apply.

BDI Insurance only covers England and Wales. (Scotland and NI have differing levels of inspection that are not under the responsibility of Defra.)

Overseas Individual Membership has no insurance cover.

BBKA Membership is subject to confirmation by the Executive and this can sometimes delay sending out welcome packs.

The other categories of membership are set out in Clause 7 of the Constitution and include Specialist Members, Institutional Members and Corporate Members. Organisations, interested in such membership should contact the General Secretary of the BBKA.

Important Note

BBKA individual membership is not the same as joining one of our Member Associations. There is no mechanism in place for BBKA individual members to include membership of any member associations and all or part of their membership fees. BBKA individual membership is aimed at individual beekeepers that do not want to join a member association but need the Membership Benefits or support the BBKA and its aims. Joining a local member association is often cheaper and at the same time includes indirect membership of the BBKA and all its benefits.
