'Will you go on Eggheads Philippa?'
'What is it? said I
'Oh just a quiz programme, it may all come to nothing, but it will be good publicity for the BBKA'
Two months later, having suffered the indignity of being auditioned to make sure we were suitable, 6 of us (5 and one reserve) turned up at the BBC Television Centre, Wood Lane for the ritual humiliation that is Eggheads.
There were some good bits - seeing Chris Deaves having his beard powdered rated quite highly; having make-up put on by and expert so that none of the cracks showed was also quite pleasing. Ceri, the World Honey Queen said she wished she had a make-up artist like that for her wedding. Quite a lot of hanging about before the filming started, most of which was in locked rooms so none of us could make a dash for the door. We even had to be escorted to the loo so that we would not plant semtex behind the news room. All of us however behaved well until it got to the actual quiz. All out carefully laid game plans came to nought. None of the subjects we thought we wanted to answer questions on materialised.
Did we win? You will have to watch the programme to find out as we all signed the official secrets act to prevent us divulging such sensitive information. The Eggheads themselves were completely charming. They took time to come and chat to us and make us feel at home under the banks of lights and cameras and the presenter Dermot Murnaghan was charm personified. We found out that they were in fact recording five episodes of Eggheads on the same day. I am glad I am not an Egghead, once was enough for me.
